Несмотря на небольшие размеры выборки во многих исследованиях, а также иногда отсутствие контрольной группы, ученые считают, что такие исследования предоставляют лучшие из имеющихся сведения об адаптации детей, а крупные репрезентативные выборки не являются необходимыми.

 

Мы обнаружили четыре исследования, в которых сделан вывод о том, что дети родителей-геев или лесбиянок сталкиваются с дополнительными трудностями. Что касается четырех оставшихся исследований, все они грешат одним и тем же недостатком. Из всей выборки на самом деле воспитывались однополыми родителями в лучшем случае буквально несколько детей; остальные принадлежали к семьям, где в течение определенного периода времени детей воспитывали разнополые родители, а затем один или оба родителя признавались, что они геи или лесбиянки и оставляли семью либо заводили однополые отношения.

 

В результате семья либо переживала дополнительные трудности, либо распадалась. Включение детей из таких семей в число детей, «воспитываемых однополыми родителями», как минимум некорректно и неверно, поскольку эти дети обычно растут с разнополыми родителями, и только позднее, после распада семьи, они начинают жить с одним или несколькими родителями-геями, причем в этих исследованиях два однополых родителя редко состоят в стабильных и длительных отношениях и на самом деле вместе воспитывают детей.

 

Авторы этих выпадающих из общей картины исследований утверждают, что семьи с родителями-геями или лесбиянками часто складываются именно таким образом, и, следовательно, их следует учитывать, как наглядное изображение того, что происходит, когда дети живут с одним или несколькими родителями-геями или лесбиянками.

Оценка исследований, которые не находят различий в воспитании детей разнополыми и однополыми родителями

 

 

Некоторые критики исследований воспитания детей представителями сообщества ЛГБ выступают против небольших неслучайных методов выборки, которые еще называются «нерепрезентативной» или «удобной выборкой»,  — именно их исследователи в этой области часто используют для сбора данных.

 

Однако в данной области удобная выборка считается не методологическим недостатком, а просто ограничением обобщаемости. Считается, что в рамках социологии и особенно психологии небольшие, качественные и длительные исследования имеют определенные преимущества по сравнению с вероятностными исследованиями: такие данные позволяют ученым заметить и проанализировать нюансы и структуру развития ребенка в течение длительного времени, что часто упускается в крупных статистических исследованиях.

 

 

Кроме того, важно отметить, что в некоторых исследованиях, где у детей с однополыми родителями не обнаружено отличий от сверстников, используются большие репрезентативные данные. В исследовании, проведенном в 2010 году стэнфордским ученым Майклом Розенфельдом, для изучения школьной успеваемости 3500 детей с однополыми родителями использовались данные комплексного учета. При этом существенных различий между семьями с однополыми и разнополыми родителями обнаружено не было. В другом исследовании были собраны данные длительного наблюдения за выборкой из более чем 20 000 детей со всей страны, причем 158 из них жили в семьях с однополыми родителями. С учетом случаев распада семей выяснилось, что с точки зрения успеваемости эти дети практически не отличаются от своих сверстников.
